Plastic Packaging Tax is heres
Posted in Industry News
What does this mean for you?
Introduced on 1st April 2022, the Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) applies to all plastic manufactured or imported plastic (including plastic such as drinks bottles) that does not contain 30% or more recycled plastic.
The aim of the tax is to reduce the use of plastic and vastly increase the recycling of plastic, which I think we can all agree is a good thing.
Any plastic that contains less than 30% recycled plastic will be taxed at £200 per metric tonne. HMRC have created a really useful guide to help you and your organization decide if the tax applies to you and if so, what you should do to make sure you are paying the correct tax – you can find the guide here.
You may need to consider:
- If you need to keep records
- Can you demonstrate your plastic has more than 30% recycled content?
- How to work with your suppliers, how do they intend to record their recycled content?
- Do you need to let your customers know if you have paid the PPT or that your packaging contains more than 30% recycled material?
If you are a carbonated soft drinks manufacturer or bottler you will no doubt have been well prepared for the introduction of this tax. However, now seems like a good time to remind you that when CO2Sustain is added to carbonated soft drinks (CSD) it helps the drinks retain carbonation for much longer, this helps reduce CO2 loss and extends the carbonation shelf-life of the drink.
The ability to extend carbonation shelf life gives manufacturers the potential to lightweight their PET and use more recycled plastics, which will further help ease the burden of the Plastic Packaging Tax.
